RACONTER
RENCONTRER

50th
1975 - 2025

L’Atelier de l'île celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025
Three exhibitions are planned for summer 2025 under the theme of Raconter-Rencontrer: at the Musée
d’art contemporain des Laurentides (MAC LAU), at the Centre d’exposition de Val-David and at the Centre d’exposition de Mont-Laurier.

L’Atelier de l’île’s 50 years of existence have positioned it as the only production artists run center in the Laurentians: it offers a creative space where tradition and technological development meet, where the attributes of both are explored, lifted, woven and put in tension through creative projects. L’Atelier de l’île is interested in deconstructing the bounderies between practices, and building relational approaches with the
surrounding community.

The theme

Raconter-rencontrer (Recounting-Encountering) allows us to talk not only about printmaking techniques but also about its evolution, its singularities and the dynamism of this constantly evolving medium.
The theme is approached from different angles: content, human encounters and techniques. The encounter with content invites us to appropriate the works in our archives and the dialogues that may emerge from them. Human encounters involve working with links that are forged, stories that are told, memories that can be reappropriated. Through questioning, exploration and connections, the integration of different printing techniques can give rise to unexpected forms.

From all these angles, how does one reflect on 50 years of existence of a print art production workshop, an artist-run center, in the heart of a region, in the center of a village? What dialogues can emerge, how are certain links woven between past and present, in a visualization of what’s to come?
How can we reflect on the evolution of the intrinsic processes of printmaking, as well as on the lateral approach, openness and decompartmentalization of visual arts practices?

Raconter-rencontrer is about talking to, seeing and hearing each other, and recognizing a collective story, a past and a future told in the present.

As an artist-run center, Raconter-Rencontrer questions the impact of a creative space on the community of which it is a part: what is told there, how do people meet, what links are forged with the surrounding community and the artistic milieu? How is history written? To tell a story is to hope to listen to others, to retrace a path taken, to sketch out a future or to report on the present.
Encounter means listening to others, opening up or closing down. It also means meeting through the other, opening up to the moment, to otherness, to the impromptu.
