SAVOIR/FAIRE
Magali Baribeau-Marchand
Artist in residence, February 10 to 21

L'Atelier de l'île welcomes the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean artist in residence from February 10 to 21. This residency closes the Savoir / Faire project, developed with the close participation of two artistic and financial partners who are recognized artist-run centers in the field of printmaking: the
Sagamie Center in Alma and the Engramme Center in Quebec.
During her exploration residency at the Atelier de l'Île, Magali Baribeau-Marchand will irrigate her project Méfiez-vous des eaux qui dorment with new techniques, focusing on the figure of the pond as the embodiment of an ambiguity between resistance and fragility. In limnology (wetland ecology), a pond is described as a shallow body of water that regulates itself, forming an ecosystem in itself. Guided by the different possibilities offered by the Atelier de l'Île, Magali will work on a body of images from her visits to ponds in recent months, inhabited by the idea of a latent image, in the process of being revealed, like those that can appear and disappear in the shimmering water. She wants to approach images as habitats: places that are conducive to sharpening our wonder, our fascination and our attachments.
Magali Baribeau-Marchand is a visual artist living in Saguenay whose practice is characterized by the use of a wide variety of mediums depending on the project deployed, ranging from sculptural installation to relational maneuver, including photography, art video (digital and analog) and micro-publishing of artist books. Her work is also expressed through collaborative crossovers; through creative collectives, community projects and intersectoral initiatives.

Roberto Santaguida

Roberto Santaguida, Untitled, still from video
As a film and video artist, Roberto Santaguida’s work has often focused on experimental narratives. Recently, he has been intrigued by the creative potential of printmaking and its intersection with video art. During his residency at Atelier de l’Île, he aims to explore how these two distinct yet interconnected mediums can influence and enrich each other. By combining traditional printmaking techniques with digital elements, he hopes to create a series of prints that reflect this process of experimentation. The project aims to contribute, in a modest way, to ongoing conversations about the convergence of contemporary and traditional art forms, offering an opportunity to reflect on creative expression.
Since completing his studies in film production at Concordia University, Roberto Santaguida's films and videos have been shown in over three hundred international festivals. He has also participated in artist residencies in many countries, including Iran, Romania, Germany, Norway and Australia. Roberto is the recipient of the KM Hunter Artist Award and a scholarship from Akademis Schloss Solitude, Germany.
Félix Chartré-Lefebvre

Félix Chartré-Lefebvre, Degré, digital embroidery on textile, 2025
With Degrés , Félix Chartré-Lefebvre questions the materiality of time and our emotional relationship to duration based on everyday objects. What measures mark time at home, the bodies that inhabit it or the sky that covers it? By crossing cosmography, family stories, cultural studies, histories of science, hormonal fluctuations and post-pandemic contemporaneity, he offers a series of alterations of domestic objects or furniture. During his residency at the Atelier de l'Île, the artist will produce several pieces printed on paper and textiles. Among these, embossings on cotton paper, of deformed hangers, to evoke the elliptical path of the Earth around the Sun which influences the seasons and our relationship to clothing. He will also produce a series of prints on bath towels of different sizes to represent the ephemeral spots on the surface of the Sun (sunspots discovered by Galileo), the Earth (clouds on Earth on March 13, 2020 at midnight, the date of the first Covid lockdown in Quebec) and the Moon (lunar seas forming dark spots).
Félix Chartré-Lefebvre is an artist, author and cultural worker. He holds a bachelor's degree in visual and media arts (UQAM, 2014) and a master's degree in art history (UdeM, 2019). After a break of about ten years dedicated to higher education, paid work and parenthood, Félix recently returned to creation. In this regard, we could describe his status as a re-emerging artist.
