July 21 to August 1 2025

Open studio
Wednesday July 30th, 2 pm to 6 pm at Atelier de l’île

During the residency, multidisciplinary artists Alexey Lazarev and Daniel Gillberg will collaborate on a series of ceramic sculptures that explore the intersections of printmaking and clay. Their process will involve a diverse range of print transfer techniques including screen printing, tissue transfer, and balloon transfer, adapted for three-dimensional surfaces. Together, they aim to investigate how surface, form, and image can merge in unexpected ways, pushing the boundaries of both printmaking and ceramic practices.

They will be happy to discuss their collaborative process and ongoing work during the open studio on Wednesday, 30 July.

about
Alexey Lazarev is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montréal since 2012. Born in Saint Petersburg, he holds a BFA with distinction from Concordia University and the University of Hertfordshire and is completing an MFA in Studio Arts at Concordia, supported by SSHRC and FRQ fellowships. He’s received multiple grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and CALQ and completed residencies in Spain, Japan, and Germany. A member of the Milieux Institute, his work has been exhibited internationally. In fall 2025, he will attend the Glasgow School of Art to explore sound, performance, and bronze casting.

Daniel Gillberg is a Swedish interdisciplinary artist currently based in Montréal, where he is completing an MFA in Sculpture and Ceramics at Concordia University. He holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Conservation from the University of Gothenburg and has a background in craft. His practice combines photography, sculpture, ceramics, and installation, using both made and recontextualized objects to explore critical spatial practices and the emotional resonance of materials. He previously completed a two-year residency at the Centre for Ceramics in Berlin and will begin an internship at the Fondation Guido Molinari in fall 2025, supported by the Elspeth McConnell Fine Arts Award. His work has been exhibited internationally, most recently at Art Souterrain in Montréal.

Jeux et matérialité

This residency project is the first collaboration between Atelier de l'île and  1001 pots: the meeting of two organizations that have helped shape the cultural identity of the village of Val-David, in the heart of the Laurentians, for several decades. This residency allows two artists to collaborate and explore the intersection of mediums, between ceramics and printmaking.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

ARTIST RESIDENCY

The call is now closed: next date to be announced in 2025

With access to both traditional techniques (including a new lithographic press dating back to 1860) and new facilities (3D printing and an exposure unit for light-sensitive processes), l'Atelier de l'île is launching a call for projects for one- to three-week research and creation residencies.

Interested in the opening up of printed art and the wide range of possibilities it opens up, l'Atelier de l'île invites artists to send in proposals for projects that approach printed art from different angles: reflecting on the exploration, weaving and tension between traditional and digital processes, questioning the language of printed art and its particularities, taking a conceptual or relational approach to printmaking.

We hope to receive proposals representative of cultural diversity that will enrich the reflections raised in connection with the chosen theme.
